Whiskey Riff Song of the Week: “Could’ve Been Her” by Ella Langley

Happy Monday, y’all.

Today for the song of the weekwe have a new piece of Ella Langley called “Could’ve Been Her.”

From his just-released debut studio EP Forgive the messthe song is a beautiful stripped down ballad where she very honestly details how a relationship ended simply because she couldn’t and wouldn’t change herself for someone else.

Written by Ella with Joybeth Taylor, Trannie Anderson and Will Bundy, I love the chorus where Ella explains that there were probably a few things she could have done to make it work being untrue to herself, but refused to do it because “it wouldn’t be me”:

“If I had closed my mouth, faked that smile
Probably could have made it work for a while
I cried in the dark instead of screaming
There would be no red wine stains on the ceiling
If I had buried my feelings
I pushed the pain away and let you cheat
I could have been her
But that wouldn’t be me”

I think it’s a pretty universal concept, but not one I’ve ever heard in a song like this with that kind of conviction, and it’s easily one of my favorites on his new project.

His sincerity in delivery and simplicity of production here is just spot on, so do yourself a favor and “Could’ve Been Her” to your playlist ASAP.

I’ve already rehearsed the whole project, and I certainly used the repeat button on this one in particular…
