It’s a small revolution in the world of video games. The famous FIFA franchise, so named for nearly 30 years, will see its name change in 2023. It will now be called EA SPORTS FC.
A good part of the football lovers devote time to it to imitate the real matches, associate the greatest players together and compete against the whole world. The FIFA video game has been a real social phenomenon for almost 30 years. The football simulation franchise remains the best-selling game in the world and especially in France with 1.3 million copies for FIFA 21 in 2020 for example. Often confronted with its competitor Konami PES in the field, the EA Sports game could boast of having the support of FIFA and a greater number of official licenses than its Japanese competitor. But, the link with the world body will soon be a thing of the past.
FIFA changes name but will keep its licenses
Indeed, the Canadian firm Electronic Arts announced on Tuesday what many had suspected for months: the end of its partnership with FIFA and therefore a change of name for the famous game. The football simulation will now bear the name of EA SPORTS FC. ” We are grateful for our many years of excellent partnership with FIFA. We have an incredible opportunity to put EA SPORTS FC at the heart of the game and deliver even more innovative and authentic experiences to growing football audiences. said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts when the new name was announced.

According to the American press, EA Sports paid 85 million euros per year to FIFA to exploit the brand in its game. The last contract, started in 2013, will expire in December 2022 and will therefore not be renewed. However, Electronic Arts wanted to be reassuring concerning the licenses for the names of players, clubs and competitions. These will be kept as confirmed by the firm but also by clubs like PSG or Real Madrid. If the name changes, the version will remain the same to the delight of the players, who are around 9.1 million in the world.
