Thousands of NASCAR fans descend on Kansas Speedway

It’s looking like a hot weekend for the thousands expected at Kansas Speedway for NASCAR. Hundreds of fans are already in Kansas City, Kansas, to snag their spot on and around the track. Before the race even begins, there’s plenty of action inside Kansas Speedway. “There are a lot of characters here and it’s a lot of fun,” Kevin Brown said. This weekend’s events drew NASCAR fans from across the country, every flag imaginable, and a construction zone atop a school bus. On the roof of what was once the “Save Our World Ministries” school bus, Brown and his friends build a riser to watch the race. “We’re on our third adventure, three straight years ahead, where we’ve acquired some form of mostly abandoned vehicle and driven it from central Iowa to Kansas City,” Brown said. The group was mostly from Iowa, including one from the Kansas City area. They bought the bus around noon on Friday and, after a stop in Menards, drove straight to Kansas Speedway. “We are all car enthusiasts. We’ve all loved NASCAR for a long time and obviously we all love a good beer,” Brown said. “It’s just the perfect little trio of RV, beer, NASCAR.” The bus cost around $5,000. The wood for the riser cost them about $300. “We’re having so much fun. You don’t need a $150,000 camper to come to the racetrack,” Brown said. Construction took a while and the bus has seen better days, but Brown says the experience is priceless. “We can sit here in the middle of turns one and two at Kansas Speedway and watch the cars go by all weekend,” he said. “It’s about sitting back, relaxing and interacting with the other people on the Kansas Speedway grounds.” Although they love their new bus, they hope to sell it at the end of their NASCAR weekend. If you want to follow their journey, from when they bought the bus to when they got home, you can check out their YouTube channel. The big Nascar Cup race of the weekend is Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Tickets are still available on the Kansas Speedway website.
