The No. 13 men’s tennis falls to No. 21 Stanford in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 4-2

NEW YORK – Columbia’s men’s tennis team’s 2023 season ended Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as the Lions fell to Stanford in a 4-2 game.

The Lions end the season with an overall record of 20-4. Columbia’s 20 wins are most in a season during Bidyut K. Goswami Head Coach of Men’s Tennis Howard Endelmanis time as head coach.

Stanford started the afternoon by picking up the doubles point to take the lead. The Stanford duo of Nishesh Basavareddy and Max Basing cruised to a 6-2 victory over Roko Horvat And Alex Kotzen in doubles No. 3. Arthur Fery and Samir Banerjee cruised to a 6-4 victory in first place to secure the doubles point for Stanford.

Nicholas Kotzen And Max Westphal paired in the No. 2 doubles. Their match was abandoned as they trailed Aryan Chaudhary and Filip Kolasinski 4-5 when the doubles point was clinched.

No. 15 Basavareddy started the singles game with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alex Kotzen in the No. 3 single to give Stanford the 2-0 advantage. No. 3 Fery followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 36 Zheng in the No. 1 spot.

Seeking to keep the Lions alive, Hugo Hashimoto completed a thrilling straight-sets, 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 33 Basing in the No. 4 singles. Nick Kotzen then posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory in fifth place over Neel Rajesh to cut Stanford’s lead to 3-2.

No. 56 Banerjee cruised to a 4-2 win over Stanford with a straight-sets, 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 21 Westphal in singles No. 2. The singles match #6 was left unfinished and questioned due to a lineup discrepancy on Stanford’s part.
