Hampered by Jose Alvarado since the start of the series, to the point of being limited to 4 points at 2 of 8 on shots in the 4th inning, and receiving a flagrant foul in the 5th inning, Chris Paul had kept the better for the end of the series. He even did better than that since the “Point God” simply made the perfect match: 33 points on 14 out of 14 on shots!!!
Never had a player achieved such a performance in a playoff match, and it is signed by a playmaker first, but also by a player who will be 37 in a week. The record was held by Nene Hilario, in 2017, and Larry McNeill, in 1975, with 12 successes without failure.
A unique performance
In the victory, synonymous with qualification, Chris Paul also achieves a 4 out of 4 on free throws, and it is quite simply the first time in history, regular season and playoffs combined, that a player shoots 18 times in a game without experiencing failure. Simply a legendary game.
“It’s incredibly unique, and you can’t tell how special it is to me…I had no idea” assures the hero of the night. “Maybe I just said to myself at half-time that I needed to shoot a little more… But during the match, I was literally focused on managing the game. I didn’t check if I was hot…because I don’t shoot enough to get hot. They just let me go to my favorite places. »
Chris Paul achieves this feat on the floor of New Orleans, a franchise he knows well and that he still carries in his heart. Monty Williams was his coach at the time, and he knows how special it is for his playmaker to achieve such a performance in this room.
“Words fail him as he has done this stuff so many times. It’s probably his number one performance because it just happened, and I know how special New Orleans is to him. He cares deeply about the city, the fans and the children. »
Six matches, 68 assists for 6 loose balls
Opposite is Willie Green, a close friend of Chris Paul. He will end in tears after the meeting. “Don’t talk about this performance just yet” he smiled. “I’m proud that we have stood the test. Couldn’t ask for a better effort. »
As for the match itself, Chris Paul is delighted to have reunited with Devin Booker. It is perhaps because there was the rear back that the point guard was able to play and shoot more freely.
“It was really good that he was back. They put such pressure on us, especially for three games. It was hard “ concedes the leader of the Suns, who ends the series with 68 assists for only 6 stray bullets!
Now up to the Mavericks, starting Monday night. Facing CP3, strong with Luka Doncic obviously, but also Jalen Brunson and Spencer Dinwiddie.
