Tennis – ATP Rome: Rafael Nadal quietly dominates John Isner (6-3, 6-1)

Rafael Nadal is off to a perfect start at the Rome Masters! Opposed to the giant John Isner, the Spaniard did not have to fight very long to get out of it in two small sets 6-3, 6-1. A very reassuring victory for Nadal who will face a bigger piece in the next round since he will be opposed to the Canadian Denis Shapovalov, 16th in the world.

Rafael Nadal needed to rebuild his confidence after his disappointment last week in Madrid. Defeated by a Carlos Alcaraz in the rush, the Spaniard only has the Rome Masters to set up his game 11 days from the start of Roland-Garros. Far from being a big fan of clay, John Isner was the perfect prey to sharpen his teeth.

Isner’s collapse

The Spaniard’s start to the match was rather timid. Although he seemed pretty good on his faceoff, he struggled more on his return plays. Not necessarily surprising given that the American’s service is his main asset. But Isner did not necessarily appear impregnable in this sector, even if in the game, everything was going well for the giant.

Isner also made Nadal tremble somewhat by getting two break points at 3-3 in this first set. Pushed to the fault by the Spaniard, the American finally cracked before giving his service, then the set. A tumble that will continue in the second round.

Shapovalov in 8th

Broken from the start, Isner had to face a steamroller. Finally well into the game, Nadal unrolled thanks to a forehand still as admirable on this surface. Imperial, the Spaniard left no hope to a John Isner in great difficulty to move on such an unstable surface.

Final victory for Rafael Nadal who joins Denis Shapovalov in the round of 16 of the tournament. The match should be a little harder against the young Canadian who showed great things in his first two rounds.
