Forte Path to the Kentucky Derby
Forte broke her young daughter during her first request in May at Belmont Park with Irad Ortiz on board. Ortiz has been on board for each of this colt’s six races and the only time they haven’t won was in the Sanford (G3) at Saratoga last summer in Forte’s second start and first time in a graded stake as well as his first time facing winners. Since that effort, these connections have won the Hopeful (G1), Breeders Futurity (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) to end his two-year campaign. Todd Pletcher brought Forte back to kick off his three-year Fountain of Youth (G2) campaign at Gulfstream in March when he overcame a poor start but took control of the race in the stretch by putting lengths on the field . He was really tested in his final Derby prep at Gulfstream in the Florida Derby last month, scouted the pitch nearly six lengths before mounting another big late run and passed Mage to secure his place as best point earned on the road in the Kentucky Derby.
