Rennes loses big to Nantes in Ligue 1

Let it be said, FC Nantes is not good to take at the moment. After OGC Nice, defeated (0-1) in the final of the Coupe de France on Saturday evening, it was Stade Rennais who had the bitter experience of this Wednesday. Bruno Genesio’s players lost despite leading 1-0 thanks to a goal from Flavien Tait (32nd). Two achievements by Kalifa Coulibaly (45th) and Nicolas Pallois (71st) have undermined their ambition to play in the next Champions League: the Bretons are now in fifth place, three lengths behind Monaco (3rd).

There was better to do, after the opener first, then at the start of the second period. But Martin Terrier and his teammates did not manage to go the distance against a Nantes team once again boosted. Their main mistake was not to be fair and efficient enough: Benjamin Bourigeaud found the post on a free kick (39th), Tait missed the target twice (47th, 56th), and Laborde missed his recovery at the reception of a corner (63rd).

On the other hand, Coulibaly took advantage of a rather fortunate situation – a bad dismissal from Gomis, a duel for the head lost in stride by Truffert – to put the two teams equal. The Malian international scored with the knee on a cross from Osman Bukari. Twenty minutes from the end, it was Nicolas Pallois who allowed the Canaries to take the lead: on receiving a cross from Ludovic Blas, the defender scored his first goal of the season with a sublime recovery of volley (71st). Except on a shot well above Mathys Tel (87th), Rennes never seemed able to catch up.

Nantes have won 11 home matches this season in Ligue 1 (draw 3 L4), their highest total in a season in the top flight since 2002/03 (11). (Opt)
