Video from the scene showed Red Sox players and coaches signaling first responders to rush to the bullpen in the outfield of Citizens Bank Ballpark. A spectator fell over an outfield railing and into the Red Sox bullpen. Multiple reports indicate that a ball was thrown towards the fan and landed in a flower bed which is at the bottom of the fence above the visitor enclosure. The fan apparently tried to duck to retrieve the ball, then fell, ending up in the bullpen. The ventilator was placed on a stretcher and removed from the field by paramedics. Video released by NBC Sports Philadelphia showed the fan was aware and alert. The video showed the fan with his head held high and speaking with first responders as he was carried off the pitch. “I think he’s a very lucky young man,” Phillies broadcaster John Kruk said. “He’s talking and all of his limbs seem to be working. I mean, it’s just scary.” The fan was taken to the trauma center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, according to medical staff at the scene. The visiting team’s bullpen at Citizens Bank Ballpark is located in center field. Masataka Yoshida, Boston’s second hitter, was facing Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler when Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado ran from the bullpen to the outfield. Medical workers quickly rushed to the second level of the bullpen as Red Sox relievers watched nearby. Security personnel immediately cleared the fans from the railing in Ashburn Alley, which is near the visiting bullpen, as medical responders attended to the fan, who was wearing a Phillies jersey. The spectator was tied to a backboard and carried from the bullpen and field on a stretcher and cart. Play resumed after a delay of approximately 10 minutes.
