Qatar 2022: A scandal denounced

Six months before the start of the World Cup, the reception of homosexual supporters is indeed a problem.

If the organizers have never ceased to ensure that supporters belonging to the LGBTQ community will be welcome, the facts seem to give them sleep. Last month, Abdullah Al Ansari, head of security at the World Cup, had also made ambiguous remarks on the issue, inviting homosexual spectators to be discreet.

If a supporter waves a rainbow flag in a stadium and it is taken away from him, it will not be because we want to offend him, but to protect him. If we don’t, another spectator could attack him, he warned. If you want to express your point of view concerning the LGBT cause, do it in a society where it will be accepted. If you buy a ticket, it is to attend a football match and not to demonstrate. So don’t come and insult an entire society. We cannot change laws or religion for the 28 days of the World Cup. »

Against the country’s policy

Moreover, homosexual supporters do not seem to be welcome everywhere. Evidenced by the survey conducted by the Swedish channel SVT. Of the 69 hotels listed on the 2022 World Cup site, three are said to be refusing bookings from gay people. Pretending to be a homosexual couple, the journalists suffered three refusals when booking. “Thank you for the question, but according to our hotel policy, we cannot accommodate you”notably replied the Torch Doha.

The other two establishments to have refused the reservation are the Magnum Hotel & Suites Westbay and the Wyndham Grand Regencey, which fully accepted their refusal when the journalists revealed their identities. For the rest, if 33 establishments made no comments, 20 others warned their interlocutors that they should not display their homosexuality. “If you wear gay makeup and dress, it’s against the policy of the country and the government. For our hotel, it doesn’t matter if you dress appropriately and don’t show any sexual behavior or kiss in public”warned one of these establishments.
