Pogacar, the terrible mistake

In search of a third consecutive coronation on the roads of the Tour de France, Tadej Pogacar still comes up against a wall. Preceded by Jonas Vingegaard, the Slovenian paid a high price for his failure in the climb of the Granon, during the first alpine stage.

Tadej Pogacar had warned, Monday, during the rest day. In the obligation to catch up on Jonas Vingegaard, the Slovenian had indeed announced that he would try to attack in each climb in the Pyrenees. Unsurprisingly, the leader of Team Emirates UAE therefore attacked from the first pass of the 16e stage, Tuesday. In vain. Despite several accelerations, including one in the first bends of the descent, the double winner of the Tour de France did not manage to unclamp the yellow jersey and remained in line in the Mur de Péguère.

The native of Komenda will undoubtedly go back on the attack, Wednesday and Thursday, hoping to take advantage of the arrivals at the top judged in Peyragudes and Hautacam, but the task promises to be tough for Tadej Pogacar. The latter has therefore probably not finished regretting his failure in the Montée du Granon, during the 11e stage. And all the more so since, according to Cyrille Guimard, this failure was avoidable. But an error of judgment and too much confidence in him precipitated his loss.

A little too sure of himself

“The rise of Galibier was a turning point in this Tour de France, with repeated attacks from the Jumbo-Visma team, and in particular Roglic and Vingegaard. Pogacar made a few mistakes that cost him dearly in this stage. In particular, he should not have reacted to the first attack from Roglic, who was more than 2 minutes behind him, and trapped Vingegaard. We should have told him that if there were attacks, his opponent was not Roglic, but Vingegaard. thus entrusted the former French coach to Cyclism’Actu, adding: “We don’t know, but maybe he was a little too sure of himself, a little too euphoric. He tried to asphyxiate everyone in the last kilometers of Galibier, and then he forgets one thing: to eat. He ran out of fuel on the last climb and lost almost 3 minutes. We will now see in a week if he lost the Tour in this climb. The Tour is of course not over, there is still plenty to enjoy.

And according to the “Druid”, Tadej Pogacar will have a hard time making the leader of Jumbo-Visma waver. “Objectively, I don’t feel that one is superior to the other. You will not make me say that Vingegaard is less strong than Pogacar, or vice versa. They are very close to each other. Everything will therefore be played on small details. We saw in the Laurent Jalabert climb that Pogacar set a very big pace, but at no time did he try to accelerate a little more. One thing is certain, Vingegaard followed relatively easily., he confided. An observation that was verified during the first Pyrenean place.
