nine members of the Blues staff, potential contact cases, in solitary confinement

Nine members of the management of the French men’s basketball team have been placed in solitary confinement since July 19, considered “potential contact cases” by the Japanese authorities, after a passenger tested positive for Covid-19. during the flight to Tokyo five days earlier. No player is however concerned, on the eve of entering the Olympic tournament against the United States, in the shock of group A, in Saïtama north of Tokyo.

“Part of the staff of the French men’s 5×5 basketball team was considered as a potential contact case by the Japanese authorities, following the positive test of a passenger during the outward flight to Japan, despite a positioning very far away” from these members of the Blue management on the plane, announced on Saturday the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF).

Isolated since July 19

“She was therefore separated from the rest of the group in compliance with health procedures and all protective measures were taken: saliva tests from July 14, then daily nasopharyngeal PCR tests and isolation from the July 19,” the body added.

In total, nine people, members of the technical and medical staff, are concerned, the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) told AFP, without specifying their identity, given the need to preserve medical secrecy.

The last phase of the French players was disrupted by the unavailability of these members of the management, in particular medical “who can no longer provide care directly or intervene with the athletes”, but have however been supplemented by others from ” of the CNOSF staff”.

The French clan hopes for the lifting of these restrictions

The health and safety protocol imposed by the Japanese authorities imposes a 14-day quarantine on contact cases, even if they are vaccinated. In this specific case, it will theoretically be lifted next Wednesday, July 28. Nevertheless, given the fact that “all the tests carried out for ten days have always turned out to be negative”, the CNOSF is currently trying to negotiate with the Japanese authorities to shorten it.

“The French delegation therefore hopes that these restrictions will be lifted so that the men’s team can start the Olympic tournament calmly and in conditions consistent with the sporting challenges”, concludes the CNOSF.
