Michelin-acclaimed SF restaurant hosts Celtics for dinner

Berber, at a Moroccan restaurant in San Francisco’s Russian Hill, hosted Boston Celtics players Marcus Smart, Aaron Nesmith and Juwan Morgan the night before their Game 1 NBA Finals upset of the Golden State Warriors, 120-108, at Chase Center on Thursday.

The trio took photos with guests and co-owner Borhen Hammami on Wednesday night amid a four-course prix fixe Moroccan dinner in a private setting that also included live entertainment.

It is unclear what the Celtics players ate at their meal. What is very clear, though, is that Marcus Smart is a big fan of ripped skinny jeans. He was lightly roasted on Twitter for changing out of his uniform post-Eastern Conference Finals win so he could take pictures in a pair of stylish jeans with his teammates. He was once again back in ripped jeans at Berber ahead of handing the Warriors their first home loss of the postseason.

Berber opened in late 2018 and is named after the Berber people, an ethnic group indigenous to North African countries including Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Aside from cuisine inspired by the people of North Africa, the nightly immersive dinner also features belly dancers, aerialists and drummers.

The Michelin Guide lists Berber as a “Bib Gourmand” restaurant and highlights its “ace cocktails,” along with the food and atmosphere. While the website says that the menu changes weekly, some regular menu items from chef Hicham Senhaji include a grilled branzino, a seasoned duck with farro and a camel burger, which is the only one offered in San Francisco.
