‘I was always struggling with respiratory problem’

Novak Djokovic managed to break the dominance of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, becoming one of the greatest athletes ever. The Serbian phenomenon broke several records from his eternal rivals, as well as having a positive balance in the head-to-head with both.

The former world number 1 experienced a rather turbulent 2022, having paid a very high price for his choice not to get vaccinated against the Coronavirus. Nole was expelled from Australia at the beginning of the year and suffered serious damage to his image as a result of that absurd soap opera.

His triumph at Wimbledon allowed him to relive a season that risked taking on the contours of failure. The 35-year-old from Belgrade has thus hoisted himself at 21 Slam, shortening the gap that separates him from Rafa Nadal in the all-time ranking.

After a few relatively quiet months, the ‘Djoker’ schedule is once again uncertain. Goran Ivanisevic’s protege is waiting to know if he will be able to fly to New York, where the US Open will kick off on August 29th.

In a lengthy interview granted to Graham Bensinger, Djokovic illustrated how his decision to change his diet greatly influenced his career.

Nole Djokovic is a legend

“I was always struggling with respiratory problem, a kind of mild version of asthma and suffocation during the night for many years since I was seven years old.

For some reason, you know, as the time was passing by these allergies were gaining more intensity in terms of the reaction I felt. It was just getting stronger and stronger and the place where I felt that the most was always the tennis court.

That’s where you know, emotions kick in expectations, pressure, and when you mix it all together, you get a formula that is causing you to really experience some major health problems on the court” – Novak Djokovic said.

“And because of it, I was retiring matches and I was it took me a lot of time recover. So we started slowly taking off layer by layer and really going, deep into things that are related to my health and trying to understand what is the core of it.

Of course, diet was one of the most integral parts of the problem and changing the diet was something that allowed me to get rid of the allergies and everything, and particularly gluten and dairy that I removed from my diet and refined sugar”.
