Hulger Rune-Casper Ruud feud enters locker room

The tension didn’t end on the court between Casper Ruud and Holger Rune after their quarterfinal showdown at the French Open on Wednesday night.

Ruud grew frustrated with teenage phenom Rune’s antics throughout the match, which included constant beating of himself and his box. Rune even yelled “leave, leave, leave” at his box at one point, prompting his mother, Aneke, to exit the stadium.

Ruud confronted Rune on the court, telling him to “grow up” during a tight four-set victory. However, according to the AFP, Rune told Danish paper Ekstra Bladet that Ruud taunted him in the locker room.

“He just went straight up to me and shouted ‘YEEEESSSS’ right up in my face” Rune said.

“You can cheer on the court all you want and be happy. I do that myself when I win. But that’s such bad style. Have some respect”

The feud even extended to the players’ parents.

Ruud’s father, Christian, called the accusation “a complete lie.” But Rune’s mother said that Christian was never in the locker room and would have no knowledge of what actually transpired.

“I don’t know Holger personally, but I have seen on TV that sometimes there can be a lot of drama. He’s young and new, so that’s excusable, but when you’re on a big stage, it might be time to grow up a bit,” Ruud, the No. 8 seed at Roland Garros, told Norwegian publication VG.

Rune, the 19-year-old Dane, is considered one of the top young prospects in tennis and this was his first significant run at a grand slam.

“I put a lot of passion in my work because that’s how I am. I am proud of my development and I also see there are things yet to be better,” Rune wrote on Instagram.

“I didn’t find my level (in the quarterfinal) and it’s frustrating. Still, I should be able to find a way to win and this requires more emotional control. I am aware of this and will improve.”
