The Golden State Warriors probably did not expect to be this busy in the 2022 NBA offseason.
Considering they just won the championship, Golden State was looking forward to a summer of celebration and relaxation.
Most title-winning teams do not worry too much about mixing things up. You just won, why change anything?
For the Dubs, this was not the case.
Numerous players hit the free agency market with plenty of incentives to get paid. Otto Porter and Gary Payton are the two most notable examples, earning pay raises with their respective new teams.
Also hitting the road is Nemanja Bjelica, Damion Lee and Juan Toscano-Anderson.
Taking their place, Donte DiVincenzo and eventually, JaMychal Green. When counting the rookie, Patrick Baldwin and the latest addition of Mac McClung, this leaves Golden state with 13 players on the roster for next season.
This means the Dubs need to add one more player before the offseason is over.
The Golden State Warriors aren’t done yet. They have one roster spot to fill before the end of the 2022 NBA offseason.
It’s already been reported that a spot will be saved for Andre Iguodala, should he choose to return as a player. I wrote here about why this could be a mistake for Golden State.
Nevertheless, one final spot is potentially up for grabs.
Who deserves it?
The Warriors secured a stretch-four in the form of Green this week. But, adding another wing presence is worth it.
Carmelo Anthony, Serge Ibaka and Markieff Morris remain on the market. Juancho Hernagomez of “Hustle” fame is available, as well, if the Dubs want to add a movie star to the roster.
In the backcourt, Dennis Schroder is an interesting backup option. Eric Bledsoe, Jeremy Lamb and Avery Bradley serve as less interesting prospects.
Whoever the Warriors choose to finalize their roster should not be taken lightly. It’s a long, 82-game season ahead and the Dubs now have a target on their back. A full rotation of capable players is always needed for a team with so much on the line.
