Gennaro Gattuso new coach of Valencia

Former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso is Valencia’s new coach for the next two seasons, until June 2024, the Spanish club announced in a statement on Thursday morning.

The 2006 world champion takes over from José Bordalas, appointed in May 2021 and who was sacked a few days ago, when he still had one year left on his contract. Valencia finished in 9th place in La Liga this season, and lost the Copa del Rey final against Betis Sevilla in April (1-1, 4-5 on pens).

Gattuso, 44, was the favorite to revive the club, deprived of European qualification for three years.

10th coach in eight years

This appointment comes ten days after the dismissal of the Singaporean businessman of Indian origin Anil Murthy from the post of president of Valencia CF, in a very hostile climate against him. Gattuso will be the tenth coach to lead the Valencia outfit since Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim took charge of the club in 2014.

This will be his 7th coaching experience since his debut on the bench in 2012. He has coached Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete, Pisa, AC Milan and Naples. Gattuso had also been recruited by Fiorentina in the summer of 2021, but he had quickly left the club, without having led any match, due to disputes over recruitment policy.
