After the slopes of Etna, the roads of Sicily crowned a sprinter. For the fifth stage of the Giro, Wednesday May 11, the riders of the Tour of Italy joined Messina, 174 kilometers further. Well led by one of his teammates, Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) won a superb victory by settling the peloton in the sprint. This first success of the season for the Frenchman is also his sixth in career on the roads of the “corsa rosa”. The Colombian Fernando Gaviria and the Italian Giacomo Nizzolo complete the stage podium.
Early in the race, Mark Cavendish and Caleb Ewan were left behind on the only climb of the day, at Portella Mandrazzi. With difficulty, the two sprint stars never managed to make the connection with the head of the race.
There is no change at the top of the ranking. Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) keeps his pink jersey with 39 seconds ahead of the German Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) and 58 seconds over the Estonian Rein Taaramäe (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux). Note that the Portuguese Joao Almeida recovers two seconds thanks to bonuses and climbs to seventh place in the general classification.
