Discuss future Lions QB decision with Jared Goff, Hendon Hooker

It’s everyone’s favorite topic: quarterbacks!

It’s been an active week for the Detroit Lions quarterback position. First, the Lions made things very interesting with the addition of former Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker with a third-round pick. And just as Jared Goff’s ‘hains’ were ready to take their victory lap, Lions general manager Brad Holmes told the media that there had been both internal discussions and conversations with Goff’s representation regarding a potential extension to Detroit.

So what exactly is going on? Does Hooker really have a starting cap in this league, or does he just represent an improvement at the backup position?

A complicated aspect of this decision is the timing. Goff has just two years left on his contract, and if the Lions manage to even meet half of the expectations set for the franchise this year, he would be in line for a big extension in the 2024 offseason.

Hooker, on the other hand, could potentially miss all of training camp this year as he recovers from a torn ACL. If so, will the Lions know enough about Hooker to even make an informed decision on whether to move forward with him as a starter or give Goff an extension?

Normally, during breaks in our PODcast, we discuss a random assortment of topics, both football-related and non-football. But with so much talk about the NFL Draft, this quarterback talk boiled over during the break.

So this week we’re releasing an episode of “Scraps” – our less formal conversation during breaks usually reserved for our live audience. Here is an excerpt from that conversation regarding the Lions quarterback job.

Ryan: “They will decide after this year, because they have to. The rubber will meet the road. They have Hendon Hooker, who does what everyone wants a quarterback to do: sit back and learn. He’s going to have a whole year to sit down and learn.

Jeremy: “I just don’t know if that’s enough to – you gonna pull the trigger on this (decision) without the dude playing a single shot? Maybe not even in pre-season? There’s a chance he won’t even play in the pre-season. He doesn’t get a training camp. You will base your decision on Hendon Hooker’s development based on in-season practice.

Ryan: “Can I tell you when (they will make the decision)? Week 18 when the Lions finished the split.

Jeremy: “And he Matt Flynn is someone and they traded him?

This whole discussion starts around the five minute podcast below and takes you through to the end.
