Nick Chubb may not be at the OTAs, but there’s no doubt the Cleveland Browns Pro Bowl guard is working.
Chubb is a gym rat and his work shows throughout the year. His combination of power and elusiveness has helped him establish himself as one of the best running backs in the NFL.
He’s also been known for not saying much, but he posted a photo of his massive back on Instagram on May 25 with the caption “Nothing can change who I am.”
Chubb also attached a video of himself doing power cleans with a huge amount of weight on the barbell. This caught the attention of the comments section, along with a few of his teammates.
“I’m training with you, szn,” wrote Browns cornerback Greg Newsome.
Browns running back Demetric Felton responded with a simple, “Big back.”
Chubb has earned the right to skip optional workouts, especially since he follows his own schedule. When asked if he was annoyed by the absence of certain players, head coach Kevin Stefanski did not characterize his feelings.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked if he was annoyed by the absence of some players, but he wouldn’t describe how he felt.
“I think it’s a voluntary program and the guys that are here, we train them,” Stefanski told reporters on May 24. “That’s how we approach it.”
Nick Chubb should have another massive year with Browns
Chubb rushed for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns last season as a solid engine of offense for the Browns. The former second-round pick was never a first-team All-Pro, but Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton predicts this could be the season Chubb does.
“Chubb will likely handle the lion’s share of touches out of the backfield until one of the Browns’ running backs proves capable of making the most of limited action,” Moton wrote in a published article. May 23. under head coach Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland ranked in the top nine in point attempts, giving Chubb a chance to rack up some eye-popping numbers.
Moton noted Chubb could be in line for more work next season, which might be hard to imagine given he notched a career-high 302 carries last season. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry during his five-year career in the NFL, which is among the league’s elite.
The Browns parted ways with Kareem Hunt and D’Ernest Johnson this offseason, which will put more of a load on sophomore running back Jerome Ford, who is expected to take on some of the slack.
Nick Chubb’s future in Cleveland has been debated
Chubb is an asset to the Browns, there’s no question. But teams that make the playoffs deep usually don’t have a running back as one of the highest-paid players on their roster. On top of that, the Browns could move to a heavier offense next year in quarterback Deshaun Watson’s second year.
Chubb signed a three-year, $36 million extension with the Browns last season and will be capped at $16.2 million next season. That creates questions for Cleveland, which they have the answer to next offseason, according to The Athletic’s Zac Jackson.
“The Browns would only take $4 million in dead money in 2024 if Chubb wasn’t on the team. That doesn’t mean the Browns will be (or should be) in a hurry to leave Chubb, who is a talent. phenomenal and a low-maintenance superstar,” Jackson wrote in April. “A decision of some sort looms, and ultimately the Browns will have to choose between another extension and moving on.”
